Anxiety

“Give your stress wings and let it fly away.” —Terri Guillemets

What is healthy anxiety

Most people experience some type of anxiety in life.  For the most part, Anxiety is natural and healthy as it arouses our flight or fight response system.  What this means is that it helps us to react to situations more quickly. For example, a student in school may have anxiety before a test but they are able to use it to help them to achieve a higher score.

When anxiety is not healthy?

In contrast, anxiety that freezes our response system has the opposite effect.  This type of anxiety leads you to worry excessively, prevents you from thinking clearly, hinders your ability to process information, and prevents you from moving forward.  Using the example above, another student might be filled with fear about the test to the point where their mind goes blank as soon as they read the first question.

When anxiety is all consuming, it makes it difficult to lead a healthy and happy life.  Eventually, our self-esteem and self-confidence is assaulted, which lowers our self-worth and leads us into a depressive state.  Ultimately, anxiety can lower our ability to trust ourselves and the world around us.

Therapy and Coping with Anxiety

In order to feel relief from symptoms of anxiety, it is helpful to understand it.  Where is it coming from? What makes it worse?  Where in your body do you feel your anxiety?  Is your anxiety related to physical symptoms, is it purely psychological, or is it a little bit of both?  What does it all mean? These are all things explored with a therapist, who has an objective view of you and your situation.  A good therapist can not only help you answer these questions, they can also assist in putting all the pieces together.

I offer tela-therapy, telephone, and in-person sessions. On a limited basis, I offer in-home services
